Tom Vac chair, 1999
81 x 50 x 55 cm
The origins of the stackable Tom Vac chair lie in a commission Ron Arad received from Domus magazine to design an installation for the 1997 Milan Furniture Fair. Soon after, Arad reused the vacuum-forming machine he had purchased to manufacture the chairs for the Domus installation, to produce a brand new design with a corrugated aluminium shell. In 1999 Vitra put an injection-moulded plastic. version of this chair, entitled Tom Vac, into production and since then there have been several multi-coloured variations, including swivelling and rocking models and a weather-resistant outdoor version.
